Review: Book - One Man's Wilderness

One Man's Wilderness is a great book, good documentary, and amazing story.  It details the very beginning of Dick Proenneke’s life at Twin Lakes in Alaska.  Dick was originally brought to my attention many years ago during a PBS telethon.  PBS played a documentary, entitled Alone in the Wilderness, about him that was narrated by Bob Swerer.  The documentary and book pretty much go hand in hand over the course of his 1st stint at Twin Lakes.  Dick retired in 1968 built himself a log cabin, hunt and fished for food, and relied solely on himself.  No neighbors and very little outside communication.  Just him, his thoughts, and the surrounding wildlife for over 30 years.  He was an incredibly skilled wood worker and brought just basic hand tools to craft his masterpiece in the Alaskan bush.  I don’t want to spoil the book and/or movie for you by going into details of what he saw and went through but I can certainly tell you it’s worth the read.  My advice is to read the book 1st and watch the documentary after.  There are two other dvd’s of footage and are equally as good.  This book is arguably one of the best i’ve read.

You can purchase the book from amazon here or you can visit and purchase the book and dvd's from Dick's offical site here.

OH MY GOODNESS IT'S SO DIFFERENT!

Well as you may or may not have noticed, I made a new banner for the site.  With the 9 straight days of downpour and drizzle I had some spare time on my hands.  So along with the new banner is a new favicon so if you happen to have this site bookmarked you should see the old boring squarespace box disappear and the new awesome logo appear.  If you can't tell, the logo incorporates everything about this site.  That's the only update for now, bigger things to come so stay tuned.
